Jessie Vargas (29-3-2) is still waiting for a fight date.

The former two-division champion was supposed to return to the ring on May 8th on the Canelo Alvarez-Billy Joe Saunders undercard that will be streamed by DAZN from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He was about halfway through his training camp when he found out that he wouldn’t be fighting in Cinco de Mayo weekend.

“The fight is off. My promoter and advisers (Guadalupe Valencia and Al Haymon) are looking for a bigger fight,” Vargas told BoxingScene.com.

Vargas, who’s promoted by Matchroom, hasn’t fought since February, 2020 when he lost a unanimous decision to Mikey Garcia. He was looking forward to ending his long layoff and was looking sharp.

“The thing is I have been looking great with my sparring in camp. Better than ever before. People will see me differently in my comeback in a positive way. I’m taking it to another level,” said Vargas.

The Las Vegas, Nevada native won his first title at 140 pounds in 2014. In 2016 he was a big underdog when he defeated Sadam Ali via 9th round knockout to capture the vacant WBO welterweight title in Washington DC.

He tested the waters in the super welterweight division when he faced Humberto Soto at a catchweight of 151 pounds in 2019 and won via 6th round knockout. Afterwards he went back down to 147 pounds when the opportunity to fight Garcia presented itself but he will now campaign as a full fledged 154 pounder.
