Heavyweight veteran Derek Chisora has made a big change to his team by linking up with a new head trainer, former world champion and veteran coach Buddy McGirt.

Chisora is scheduled to return on May 1, when he faces former WBO world champion Joseph Parker in a crossroads fight.

McGirt trains several other boxers, including former light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. He is best known for his work with fighters like the late Arturo Gatti.

Chisora was in action back in October, when he lost a hard-fought decision to former undisputed cruiserweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk, who is currently the mandatory challenger to the WBO title.

The contest will now match two new corners, as Parker recently parted ways with longtime trainer Kevin Barry and hired former world champion Andy Lee.

Lee has a number of clients. He works as the assistant trainer to WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Parker’s handlers are very happy with  the switch to Lee.

“I think it’s exciting to see how it plays out,” Parker’s manager David Higgins told Sky Sports. “We’ve heard good things about Andy. The two of them will spend a bit of time together and get to know each other.

“(Parker) He’s excited about freshening things up a bit and maybe learning some new things, in a new environment. He had a wonderful run together with Kevin Barry and became world champion, but now it’s time for a new chapter.”
