Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (23-1) is hoping to have a big 2021 after having only 1 fight in 2020. Such was the case for most fighters as the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc all over the world.

The 25-year-old won a unanimous decision over former title challenger Terrell Gausha in September in a Showtime main event and is currently back in training in South Florida with his trainer Kevin Cunningham as he waits for his next fight date.

Cunningham said that the plan is to get a significant fight in his next ring appearance and then hopefully a title shot.  Lubin currently holds the #1 ranking in the WBC and hopes to get a shot at revenge against Jermell Charlo.

The two square off in 2017 when Lubin was caught cold and stopped in the first round. Lubin has since rebuilt himself under the guidance of Cunningham and has reeled off 5 wins in a row.

If all goes as Cunningham hopes, Lubin will be in the ring with a former champion in the spring.

“We’re back in the full swing of things, training five days a week. Hammer has worked his way back to the #1 WBC mandatory spot and earned his title shot. Jermell Charlo is  a unified champion so he’s earned the right to fight whoever he wants next. So if Charlo isn’t next, Hammer’s not interested in tune ups. He wants to make the fights that the fans want to see. Hopefully we’ll get Julian Williams, Jarrett Hurd, Tony Harrison or Jeison Rosario to step up next,” Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.

Lubin was a highly decorated United States amateur who turned pro in 2013.  He won his first 5 fights by knockout. He faced Charlo for the WBC super welterweight title with only 17 professional fights under his belt.
