McGregor’s Boxing Coach: 85-90% Chance Pacquiao Fight Happens

Phil Sutcliffe, who is Conor McGregor’s boxing coach, believes there is an ’85-90 percent chance’ that his fighter takes on Manny Pacquiao in 2021.

On January 23, the former two-division UFC champion will face Dustin Poirier in a rematch, on Fight Island in the main event of UFC 257.

McGregor made his boxing debut in August of 2017, when he was stopped in ten rounds by five division champion Floyd Mayweather at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Following that defeat, McGregor returned to the UFC and has been there since.

In the last twelve months, both McGregor and Pacquiao have expressed a lot of interest in facing each other in a boxing match.

Pacquiao, the WBA’s welterweight champion, has been out of the ring since July of 2019, when he turned back the clock to win a twelve round split decision over unbeaten Keith Thurman.

Both McGregor and Pacquiao are now represented by the same management company.

If everything goes well next Saturday, Sutcliffe is expecting McGregor to face Pacquiao in the coming months.

“85-90 percent chance, maybe April, March. March, April or May. I’d like him to be in a boxing camp for at least two months, eight weeks. I mean, he’s fit now, he’s going to train straight after the fight. He’s gonna take probably a week off,” Sutcliffe said to ESPN.

“I told him take a week off. Don’t worry, if he wants to take a week off, he can, then go straight back on the horse. We don’t want him out galavanting too much, but he has to enjoy the win, he has to enjoy the win, enjoy the contest.”

As BoxingScene.com previously reported, UFC President Dana White is hoping McGregor forgets about Pacquiao and stays focused on MMA – at least in 2021.

“A boxing match with any of these guys, that stuff’s always going to be there. You are the absolute best in the world right now in MMA and the timing is right now. Not getting any younger,” White said,

“I’d love to see him go for it here over the next year. If he wants to fight one of these boxing guys, do that next year. That fight’s always going to be there.”
