The fight Sullivan Barrera has been chasing for several years, is being targeted to take place on January 30. Although the date has not been confirmed, DAZN is making moves to finally stage the postponed clash between the tough Cuban and former light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev.

Barrera had everything in place to face Kovalev in April, but the ongoing coronavirus pandemic erupted and forced the cancellation of the entire event.

Kovalev has been out of the ring since getting knocked out by Canelo Alvarez in November of 2019, while Barrera was defeated in two of his last three fights to Jesse Hart and Dmitry Bivol.

At this late stage in both of their respective careers, the winner will move forward and the loser will likely be on the brink of retirement.

“We had a date for the fight against Kovalev on April 25, then it was postponed because of the COVID-19 situation that has spread quite a bit. We keep training and waiting for Golden Boy to let us know. So we’ll be ready,” Barrera told George Ebro.

“[Kovalev is] the fight we wanted before and the one we want now. We keep working soft, doing fitness. With my coach Derik Santos we haven’t stopped doing things in the gym, softly, but working.

“We’ve lowered the intensity a lot. So right now I couldn’t tell you [what this has done to my body]. I don’t have a meter. I’m 38 years old, 39 soon. I feel good. Working fitness has done me great, because I feel stronger than I’ve felt in a while. Right now the body looks totally different. I’m telling you, we’re working at half-machine, but when we get the confirmation, we’ll push the accelerator, but I’m happy with what I’ve achieved in these months.

“We’re going to come in there with everything against Sergey and then we’ll look for a new challenge for a world title. Sergey has always been a madman, but during the Canelo fight he really got hurt and that may be something in our favor.”
