Juventus 2-1 Ferencvaros: Morata books last-16 place as Ronaldo equals Messi record

Spread the love

Juventus’ win lifts them to nine points in Group G. More importantly, it confirms that they will finish at least second in the group. Group leaders Barcelona have seen off Dynamo Kiev 4-0 in Ukraine to also confirm their qualification. Ferencvaros stay bottom of Group G, behind Dynamo on goal difference. This loss will hurt but third in the group is certainly achievable for them.

Juventus secure their passage to the Champions League knockout phase with two games to spare thanks to a fortuitous comeback win over plucky Ferencvaros. The hosts laboured for much of the match. Ferencvaros looked set to leave Turin with a creditable draw before Morata came off the bench to break the Hungarians’ hearts at the end.

90′ + 4′ Chiesa is fouled by Botka in his own half. Juventus keep possession from the free-kick and that’s that!

F. Chiesa

Yellow Card

90′ + 3′ Chiesa is booked for some nonsense. Juventus take the opportunity to drop back into their half. There’s no way they’re letting this slip now.

J. Cuadrado

90′ + 2′ Cuadrado’s cross was a peach but Ferencvaros will be kicking themselves. Dibusz didn’t cover himself in glory there. The keeper saved Morata’s shot, then accidentally knocked it in with his arm as he landed.

90′ + 2′ GOAL! JUVENTUS 2-1 FERENCVAROS! Morata breaks Ferencvaros’ resistance! Cuadrado gets on the end of a ball down the right and fires it towards the far post. Morata meets it with his head. Dibucz saves it but it squirms under the keeper’s arms and into the net!

90′ There’ll be four more minutes of this. You imagine Ferencvaros will be disappointed now if they can’t see the draw out.

89′ A late Juventus winner doesn’t seem forthcoming at the moment. Rabiot and Ramsey look to play a one-two but the attack breaks down. Rabiot barges Boli off the ball to hand Ferencvaros a free-kick.

87′ Ferencvaros get a timely free-kick in their defensive third as Rabiot fouls Laidouni, giving them the chance to move forward en masse for the first time in a while. That will suit them just fine.

85′ Blazic beats Morata to a pass and tries to send Ferencvaros upfield. Cuadrado shields the ball and Heister clips the Colombian’s heels. It’s a free-kick.

83′ Juventus’ corner peters out into nothing as Cuadrado commits handball. It looks like Juve are slightly running out of ideas.

A. Ramsey

83′ Ramsey also comes on for Arthur. Juventus might benefit from the Welshman’s drive from midfield at this late stage.

A. Rabiot

R. Bentancur

83′ Bentancur’s shot is his last act of the game. Rabiot comes on in his stead.

82′ Chance for Juventus! Chiesa cuts inside onto his right foot and crosses from the left of the box. It’s headed back out to Bentancur. The Uruguayan has a pop from outside the box and Dibusz is sufficiently worried to tip it over the crossbar. Corner for Juve. The hosts will make some substitutions first.

Yellow Card

80′ Danilo is booked for a slightly dangerous challenge for a header with Uzuni.

78′ Laidouni makes his first contribution to the game by firing an ambitious effort over. Ferencvaros have largely been limited to potshots from distance, apart from their goal.

76′ Morata hits the outside of the post! Chiesa sends the Spaniard running down the left-hand channel. Morata takes a few touches to get into the box and aims for the bottom left corner. It beats Dibusz and kisses the woodwork before going out for a goal-kick.

A. Laïdouni

D. Sigér

75′ Siger, who’s on a booking, also goes off. The French midfielder Laidouni comes on.

E. Botka

G. Lovrencsics

75′ Here are those Ferencvaros changes. Lovrencsics goes off. Botka comes on.

74′ Ferencvaros are preparing a few more changes. It looks like they’ll more than settle for the point, providing they can hold out of course.

72′ Juventus are huffing and puffing without really getting anywhere for the time being. Boli buys a free-kick off de Ligt to give Ferencvaros some brief respite.

F. Boli

T. Nguen

70′ Nguen also heads for the bench, having played a vital role in Ferencvaros’ goal. The Ivorian forward Boli comes on.

O. Zubkov

70′ Ferencvaros bring on some fresh legs. Zubkov makes way for Barbosa.

69′ Ferencvaros get a rare opportunity to shoot as Nguen’s shot from range is blocked. The visitors haven’t been able to create much in this second half.

68′ Chance for Juventus! Ronaldo rounds Dibusz and looks certain to score with a cheeky backheel flick but Dibusz gets to his feet just in time to intercept before Ronaldo can find the net! Ronaldo looks amazed that he didn’t score there. It was from a tight angle, to be fair.

D. Sigér

Yellow Card

67′ Siger sees yellow for that foul on Kulusevski. It’s been a fairly honest game so far.

66′ Siger brings down the Swedish substitute Kulusevski in the centre of the pitch. This will be a card of some kind.

64′ Juve force another corner, their fourth of the game. Cuadrado swings it towards his full-back on the opposite side Alex Sandro who heads wide from the centre of the box. Kulusevski’s follow-up shot is blocked.

D. Kulusevski

W. McKennie

62′ Last to go is McKennie who’s been fairly anonymous. Kulusevski replaces him.

F. Chiesa

F. Bernardeschi

62′ Bernardeschi is next to make way. Chiesa will replace him on the wing.

P. Dybala

62′ Pirlo has seen enough and makes a triple substitution. Morata comes on for Dybala first.

61′ There are more chances for both sides. Juve get a corner off Blazic and Cuadrado heads wide on the follow-up. Up the other end, Alex Sandro hands Ferencvaros a corner of their own and Lovrencsics fires wide from distance.

59′ Juventus are building momentum now! First Dybala forces a routine save from Dibusz with a shot from outside the box. The hosts then win a free-kick which lands for Bernardeschi. Bernardeschi takes it on the half-volley and hits the post! It was heading for the bottom right corner.

58′ Blazic’s loose backpass nearly puts Ferencvaros in trouble. Thankfully for them Dibusz is alert and slides in to clear before Ronaldo can get on the end of it.

57′ Ferencvaros press Juve as the hosts try to pass out of their penalty area, almost presenting them with a chance or two. Juve survive but it’s all getting a little sloppy.

55′ Ferencvaros’ captain Lovrencsics plays it safe by nodding a cross out for a Juventus corner. Bentancur gets on the end of it but can’t keep his header down.

54′ Cuadrado takes a crossfield pass down and lays off for Arthur. Arthur spoons another shot over the bar from way out. Can’t knock him for trying.

53′ Juventus get a free-kick in a central position as Dvali fouls Dybala. Ronaldo steps up and smashes it into Ferencvaros’ defensive wall.

51′ Ronaldo tries a throughball for Dybala but Dybala is offside. De Ligt is soon penalised for barging into the back of Nguen.

49′ Bernardeschi slams a shot against a defender from the left of the box. Bernardeschi pulls up shortly after as he manages to keep the ball in play near the corner flag. He’s wincing but looks able to continue. It looks like a minor twisted ankle.

47′ Cuadrado wins a free-kick in his own half as he’s fouled by Nguen. Ferencvaros will be motivated to keep hold of what they have at least for as long as they can.

45′ Juventus get the second half going. No changes at half-time.

Ronaldo is already the top scorer in Champions League history with a scarcely believable 131 goals. His goal here was his 70th in Champions League home games, drawing him level with his historic rival Lionel Messi. As long as Juventus have him, they’ll fancy their chances of winning any game. Can the 35-year-old inspire Juve to victory again here?

It’s all square at the break then after a surprisingly even first half. Juventus have had more of the ball but went behind to Ferencvaros early on thanks to Uzuni’s opportunistic strike. Ronaldo hauled the hosts level 15 minutes later. More of this to come!

45′ + 2′ Juventus clear the corner. That’ll be that for now.

45′ There’ll be two added minutes in this first half as Uzuni wins a free-kick near the centre circle. Heister knocks the ball off McKennie to win Ferencvaros a corner.

43′ Ferencvaros are holding their own at the moment. The visitors will be happy if they go in level at half-time. Bernardeschi skips towards the box from the left and crosses in only for Frimpong to head it away.

41′ Ronaldo beats a defender and sends the ball down the line for Bernardeschi to scamper onto. Bernardeschi can’t beat the offside trap though.

39′ Bentancur rattles a long-range shot off a defender for a Juventus corner down their left. It’s taken short and worked to Bernardeschi whose ambitious effort sails over.

37′ Ferencvaros respond to Juve’s equaliser by going upfield again. The visitors win a corner as Zubkov blasts a shot off de Ligt. Uzuni passes the corner to the edge of the box. Ronaldo sticks a foot out to divert Heister’s effort out for another corner. Again Juve clear.

J. Cuadrado

35′ There was nothing frilly about Cuadrado’s pass. It was just good zippy Juventus play. The hosts are back on level terms.

Cristiano Ronaldo

35′ GOAL! JUVENTUS 1-1 FERENCVAROS! This Ronaldo goal will count! Ronaldo receives a pass from Cuadrado just outside the box and lashes a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner .

33′ Ronaldo smashes the ball in the net from the centre of the box but he’s way offside. Still, Juve are starting to assert themselves now.

31′ Juve aren’t having things all their own way at the moment. Dybala and Ronaldo are caught offside, both from impatient balls from the back.

29′ Cuadrado swings the corner out to the static Danilo. The Brazilian’s header is on target but doesn’t worry Dibusz who catches it easily. Seconds later Arthur skips past a challenge and fires high and wide from the edge of the box.

28′ Ronaldo takes the ball down in the box and lays off to Dybala whose shot is blocked. Juve come again as Alex Sandro flings a cross into the box for Cuadrado. Cuadrado manages to win a corner for Juve.

26′ Juve look vulnerable on the counter-attack as Ferencvaros suddenly find themselves three-on-three. Zubkov races through the middle and smashes a shot against a defender for a corner. Juve manage to see it out.

24′ Juve knock the ball around in front of Ferencvaros’ box, trying to break down Ferencvaros’ green and black wall. Blazic makes a great diving header to stop Ronaldo running into the penalty area.

23′ Dybala latches onto a ball over the top but the offside flag goes up once more. The striker couldn’t keep the pass in play anyway.

21′ Going behind seems to have jolted Juventus awake after a slightly soporific start. Ronaldo wins a header in the box but he’s offside.

M. Uzuni

19′ GOAL! JUVENTUS 0-1 FERENCVAROS! Ferencvaros take a shock lead! It comes from nothing as de Ligt loses a header. Nguen races down the right and crosses. It’s blocked but loops up for Uzuni who sweeps home on the volley!

17′ Ferencvaros’s midfield are playing very narrowly without the ball. It’s proving hard for Juventus to break down.

16′ Ronaldo sniffs an opportunity in Ferencvaros’ box but Dibusz rushes out to prevent the striker from reaching the ball.

14′ Juventus get their first decent chance of the game. Ronaldo finds his strike partner Dybala to the right of the box. Dybala shoots straight at Dibusz who saves with his feet!

12′ Bernardeschi dribbles down the left for Juventus. The Italy winger tries to find Ronaldo but the pass is cut out.

10′ Ferencvaros win a corner down their left as Lovrencsics’ long-range is blocked by de Ligt. Juventus deal with it easily. It looks like Uzuni is playing wide left with Nguen going it alone up front.

8′ Juventus are having a slow start to the game. Cuadrado gets down the right and crosses looking for the head of Ronaldo. He can’t find Juve’s Portuguese talisman though and Ferencvaros clear.

6′ Uzini commits handball in fairly innocuous fashion. Ferencvaros are seeing plenty of the ball so far.

4′ Nguen wins a free-kick in Juventus’ half as the winger’s brought down by Arthur. Ferencvaros don’t look intimidated at visiting their illustrious opponents’ home turf.

2′ Ferencvaros get an early shot on target as Nguen has a pop from outside the box. Szczesny gets down to make a routine save.

1′ We’re underway here in Turin!

The two sides are out on the Allianz Stadium pitch. Juventus are playing in their traditional black and white kit. Ferencvaros are in their green and black away kit.

This tie has an intriguing whiff of history to it. This is the first time Juventus have hosted a Hungarian team since 1973, while it’s Ferencvaros’ first away game to an Italian side since they drew 2-2 with Bologna in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968. They lost the final of the competition that year to Leeds United. Will this game go down in the history books too?

Juventus make six changes to the side that defeated Ferencvaros in Hungary three weeks ago. They’re without their first-choice centre-back pairing of Bonucci and Chiellini, but De Ligt and Alex Sandro are fit again and start. Ferencvaros only make two changes from that game as they switch to a 5-4-1 formation.

FERENCVAROS (5-4-1): Denes Dibusz; Gergo Lovrencsics (c), Miha Blazic, Abraham Frimpong, Lasha Dvali, Marcel Heister; Oleksandr Zubkov, David Siger, Somalia, Tokmac Nguen; Myrto Uzuni.

SUBS: Franco Israel, Federico Chiesa, Radu Dragusin, Aaron Ramsey, Carlo Pinsoglio, Gianluca Frabotta, Dejan Kulusevski, Alvaro Morata, Adrien Rabiot, Manolo Portanova.

JUVENTUS (4-4-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Juan Cuadrado, Danilo, Matthijs de Ligt, Alex Sandro; Weston McKennie, Rodrigo Bentancur, Arthur, Federico Bernardeschi; Paulo Dybala (c), Cristiano Ronaldo.

A win should be a straightforward task for Juve – they won the reverse fixture between these two sides 4-1 three weeks ago with Alvaro Morata scoring twice. Ferencvaros only have one point in Group G but still have a realistic chance of a Europa League place. Not much is expected of them here but that could make them more dangerous.

Juventus will be looking to further their cause of qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase as they welcome Hungarian minnows Ferencvaros to Turin. Juve sit second in Group G, five points ahead of their nearest challengers Dynamo Kiev. A win here would put Andrea Pirlo’s team within touching distance of the next round.
