WBA “regular” heavyweight champion Mahmoud “Manuel” Charr is still pressing to make a defense of his title against former unified king Andy Ruiz.

Charr has been inactive since November of 2017, when he captured the “regular” belt.

And Ruiz has been out of the ring since losing his WBA, IBF, IBO, WBO world titles, by twelve round decision, in the December rematch with Anthony Joshua.

To become more active, Charr recently linked up with veteran promoter Erol Ceylan.

He says Ceylan is going to hold a meeting in the United States, to discuss the possibility of facing Ruiz, who fights under the banner of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.

Ruiz has been linked to a fight with Chris Arreola, but Charr hopes to get him first.

“I hope it’s serious, because I talk to my promoter Erol Ceylan, and his partner is Al Haymon,” Charr told Sky Sports. “He works very close to Al Haymon. Erol Ceylan is right now in Turkey. He will fly next week to the USA to talk personally to these people and I hope he can make this fight happen.

“If any opponent gives you a chance for the world title fight, you say no or do you say yes? Make this fight happen, I’m ready for you. If you want, do this fight. I will risk my belt. I don’t need an easy fight. Fight me.”

Charr is one of several WBA champions at heavyweight. Trevor Bryant is the WBA’s ‘interim-champion’ in the division, with Robert Helenius holding the WBA’s Gold title. The boxer viewed as the true WBA champion of the weight class, is unified beltholder Anthony Joshua, who is recognized by the sanctioning body as the “super champion.”
