Hearn: Fury, Joshua Meeting Was Probably Awkward, Not Staged

Eddie Hearn, promoter for WBA, IBF, IBO, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, says the chance meeting between his boxer and WBC champion Tyson Fury was not staged to create headlines.

The two British boxers recently ran into each other while vacationing in Marbella.

Fury pulled up in his car while Joshua was on the street with friends. The two fighters spoke for a moment, pledging to face each other after taking care of their respective obligations in the upcoming future.

Fury is on track for a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder, targeted for December 19 – while Joshua has a mandatory defense against Kubrat Pulev, which is also being eyed for the month of December.

“It was probably awkward,” Joshua’s promoter Hearn told Sky Sports News about their meeting in Marbella. Although people thought it was staged, it definitely wasn’t. ‘Make sure you beat Deontay Wilder, make sure you beat Kubrat Pulev, see you next year’. The two respect each other. It will be a great build-up, backwards and forwards, two very different characters.

“It’s the biggest fight in world boxing. Both guys are fully on board but need to get the job in December. AJ’s fight date is looking like early December.”

As previously reported, there is an agreement in principle on the financial terms for a two-fight series in 2021.

“There is an agreement between the two of them and the parties to take those fights, two of them, in 2021,” Hearn said.

“We’re in a good place but, as the world has shown us in 2020, anything can happen. Right now? The focus for AJ in on Pulev. The focus for Fury is on Wilder again. AJ is in good spirits and is starting camp now for Pulev.”
