Timelines for 2023 Africa Games could be affected if we don’t get funds on time – LOC Chairman

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2023 Africa Games, Dr. Ofosu Asare, has cautioned that the schedule for the multi-sport event could be affected should they fail to receive funds on time.

With less than a year until the games to be staged in Accra, the Local Organizing Committee is racing against time to put adequate infrastructure in place to host the multi-sport event.

Funding the multi-sport event has become the most significant problem confronting the country, with notorious delays in releasing approved funds, which has stalled the progress of work.

Speaking to Joy Sports, chairman of the committee, Ofosu Asare, said they waiting for funds from government to speed up work on the venue to host the games otherwise timelines will be affected.

“We are looking forward to getting the needed funding to get the job done but funding doesn’t come from us it comes from Government…we are to have $140 million [from Ghana Government] going towards infrastructure. That’s for infrastructure. We haven’t even looked at operational cost, procurement and what have you so a lot of money is involved if you are hosting the Games,” he noted.

We are less than a year away to the 2023 Africa Games to be staged in Ghana 🇬🇭. 54 countries, 25 disciplines, 5,000 athletes are expected to assemble to compete for honours.

“In my view, if we don’t get the money on time, it is going to affect the timelines for the games,” Ofosu Asare added.

The 2023 Africa Games has been scheduled for August 4-19, a 15-day period that will see all of Africa’s top sporting talents converging in Accra to compete for honours.
